The highlight of Hartwell summers, this fun tradition actually began in 1977 when the Chamber of Commerce was asked to begin a downtown event to draw people. The Chamber asked the Hartwell Junior Service League for help. This task was given to HSL’s Public Affairs committee, led then by Cheri Griggs, who organized the event on the square. With the aid of the local Boy Scouts and others in the community, that first event included sidewalk sales, children’s activities, a parade, a car-smashing, vendors, and entertainment. For the first few years, HSL did it all, including the fireworks! As the event grew each year, the Chamber, the DDA, and the YMCA all added their events to Pre 4th to make it a whole weekend of fun for the community. HSL takes pride in providing a family reunion type feel for our vendors, community, and friends who return each year.
