Library Rose Garden Care

Picture
he Environment Committee of HSL held a “clean up day” at the Hart County Library on February 15, 2022. The rose beds were weeded, sprayed, mulched, and the plants pruned. This is an ongoing project as the roses were originally planted and maintained by the Environment Committee. Throughout the year, the roses are watered, weeded and fertilized as needed. This year for the first time a general cleanup of the library grounds was done: trees pruned, trash picked up, and the grounds were sprayed for weed control. Afterwards members had lunch at a local restaurant allowing time for members to interact outside a club meeting and providing a boost to the local economy.

2021 Painted Pickets Project

Members of the committee, led by Margo Seagraves, worked together to to paint beautiful designs onto wood fence pickets, and then worked with members of the Hart County Botanical Garden to install the pickets in their Children's Garden. Margo Seagraves proposed the project and procured the materials with support from our local Home Depot. Pickets were first painted completely white. Then, member and artist, Ann Carswell, pencilled the larger designs onto several picket groupings. Then several groups of HSL members painted the designs and added their own creativity onto the remaining pickets. Once done, the pickets were installed in the shady Children's Garden of the Hart County Botanical Garden to add color and interest to this very shady area.

⛵Come sail away!

About 90 Hartwell Elementary School first-grade students brought to life a book they have been reading, Toy Boat, by constructing a toy sailboat themselves and then testing it out on the waters of Lake Hartwell.

The students decorated the sails for their boats at the Hartwell Art Center with the help of the
Hartwell Service League on Wednesday, May 18th, and then toured the sailboats on display throughout downtown Hartwell to gather  inspiration.

The next day the students put their sailboat designs to the test at Big Oaks Recreation Center after reading the newest StoryWalk featuring Toy Boat that is now on display at Big Oaks for families to enjoy.

Our Own Cookbook

Picture

In March of 2020 as the Covid Pandemic began, HSL member Dixie Northrup had the idea of creating an original HSL cookbook that would include the entire community and raise funds for our projects as all other HSL fundraisers were being cancelled for the year. With the help of the entire club membership and others in the community, the cookbook was prepared, published, and put on sale in October 2020. It was a community success and generated a great deal of funds for our projects!

Cookbooks are still available for purchase.
They make ideal gifts and are a bargain at just $10 each!

Ask any HSL member for a copy or contact us to reserve your cookbook
 (see Contact page).

    Watch our club's commercial below!

HSL members are a talented, and daring, group of women. Working together, members were able to write, direct, and act in our very own unique commercial to promote cookbook sales for "Together We Can Cook." Students from the Audio-Visual department of Hart County Charter High School spent the day filming the commercial. Additionally, the students edited the footage to produce this entertaining video. Several members also appeared on a locally produced TV show to promote the cookbook.

HSL Supports REACH

Picture
The Hartwell Service League presented the Hart County Education Foundation with a $500 donation last week to benefit the REACH Hart program. Pictured, from left to right, are Hartwell Service League Education Committee member Lynn Everett, Hart County Education Foundation Executive Director Bobbie Busha, and Hartwell Service League Education Committee Chair Renee Curry.

REACH, or Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen, is a mentoring and scholarship program, which begins in the 8th grade with the identification of academically promising students, most of whom will be first generation college or technical school graduates. The five annually selected REACH scholars in each class are paired with a volunteer community mentor and an academic coach, both of whom help guide the scholar throughout their middle and high school years. To provide support or learn more about the REACH Hart program, please email Hart County Education Foundation Director Bobbie Busha at [email protected].

Cheri Griggs Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
